What karat actually measures
Karat is a measure of purity, not weight. Pure gold is divided into 24 parts. 24K means all 24 parts are gold — 99.9 percent pure. 22K means 22 parts are gold and 2 parts are other metals (usually copper, silver or zinc), giving 91.67 percent purity.
There are also 21K (87.5 percent), 18K (75 percent) and 14K (58.3 percent) variants, but in India and Pakistan, 22K and 24K dominate the retail market.
Price difference: a simple formula
Since 22K has less pure gold by weight, its price is always lower. The exact ratio is 0.9167. If 24K is selling for Rs 285,000 per tola today, 22K will be around Rs 261,000 — about 8.3 percent less.
This is why investors who only care about gold content prefer 24K bars and coins, while jewellery buyers usually go for 22K.
Durability: the real reason 22K exists
Pure 24K gold is soft. Push your fingernail into a 24K coin and you can leave a mark. That softness makes it impractical for daily-wear jewellery — rings get bent, chain links pull apart, and stones fall out of settings.
Mixing in 8 percent alloy metals (the recipe used in 22K) hardens the gold significantly without changing its rich yellow colour. That is why almost all wearable jewellery in South Asia is 22K.
Which one should you buy?
Buy 24K if you are investing — bars, coins or biscuits hold their value because they are priced purely on gold content. Resale is straightforward at any reputable dealer.
Buy 22K if you are making a piece to wear — necklaces, bangles, rings, earrings. It will look almost identical to 24K but survive years of daily use.
For gifts, 22K is usually the safer choice unless the recipient has specifically asked for an investment piece.
How to verify what you are getting
Always look for a hallmark stamp. In India, BIS hallmarking is mandatory and shows 916 (for 22K) or 999 (for 24K). In Pakistan, hallmarking is less universal — buy from established jewellers and ask for a certificate.
Never accept verbal-only assurances on purity, especially for purchases above 1 tola. A small lab test costs a few hundred rupees and gives complete peace of mind.
