How the gold rate in India is set
The daily gold rate in India is set by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) from Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, based on the international spot benchmark (XAU/USD) converted at the interbank USD/INR rate and adjusted for 15% customs duty and 3% GST. Regional sarafa bazaars — Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad — then add a small local premium for handling and refining.
When the rupee weakens or global spot moves, Indian gold moves within minutes. Our engine mirrors the IBJA formula, so the per-10-gram, per-tola and per-gram numbers stay aligned with what BIS-hallmarked jewellers quote at the counter. 24K is investment-grade pure gold; 22K is the mandatory hallmark karat for wedding jewellery; 21K is common in Kerala and Gulf-linked designs; 18K is used for diamond-set and lightweight pieces.
How this rate is calculated (and where it can be wrong)
The number at the top of this page is not typed in by hand and it is not scraped from another rate site. It is computed from two live inputs — the international gold spot price in US dollars per troy ounce, and the USD/INR exchange rate — and then converted into the unit India actually trades in.
24K per 10 g = (spot USD per troy ounce ÷ 3.11035) × USD/INR + local premium- Refresh cadence
- Recalculated roughly every 10 minutes while international markets are open. Weekend and holiday values hold the last traded spot price, because the metal itself is not trading.
- Unit conversion
- India quotes in 10-gram units, and a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams — so the ounce divides into 3.11035 ten-gram units exactly.
- Karat purity
- 22K is 22/24 = 91.67% pure, 21K is 87.5%, 18K is 75%. Each lower karat rate on this page is the 24K rate multiplied by that fraction — jewellery alloy is otherwise identical metal.
- Known limitation
- Indian retail rates additionally carry import duty, GST and jeweller making charges, which are applied at the counter and are not part of the metal rate shown here. Treat this page as the metal value, and expect a jeweller's bill to be higher once making charges and tax are added.

24K gold is 99.9% pure and used for investment bars, coins and the benchmark rate quoted on this page. 22K gold is 91.6% pure and is the BIS-hallmarked standard for jewellery — the remaining 8.4% is an alloy that gives it the strength needed for daily wear. 22K sells at roughly 91.6% of the 24K per-gram price, before making charges and GST.
Why does the gold rate in India change during the day?＋
The Indian rate tracks two live inputs — the international XAU/USD spot price and the interbank USD/INR rate. When either moves, IBJA and city sarafa bazaars re-quote. We refresh the on-page number every 10 minutes to keep it aligned with those two feeds.
How much GST is charged on gold in India?＋
Retail gold jewellery in India carries 3% GST on the metal value plus 5% GST on making charges. Investment gold (24K coins and bars) also carries 3% GST. The per-gram number on this page is the pre-GST market rate; add GST when comparing to a jeweller's final bill.
What is BIS hallmarking and why does it matter?＋
BIS hallmarking is mandatory for all gold jewellery sold in India. A genuine hallmark carries the BIS logo, the karat purity (e.g. 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K), a 6-digit HUID and the jeweller's mark. Always verify these four marks before paying — they guarantee the karat purity of the piece.
What are typical making charges on Indian gold jewellery?＋
Making charges usually range from 8% to 25% of the metal value, depending on design complexity, brand and city. Machine-made light chains sit at the low end; hand-crafted bridal and antique-finish sets sit at the high end.
